Why is this? The most important learning opportunity for an appraiser is during the mandatory 2.5 years of required apprenticeship (not counting classroom time). Unfortunately, there is no standardization with regard to what is learned in an apprenticeship and while one appraiser may have a rich, challenging and varied experience, another may not be so lucky or may have apprenticed in a location where there was little variation and challenge in the types of properties being appraised. Naturally, each appraiser has their own talents, work ethic, focus on continuing education and client service priorities in their professional years.
